John Lewis to anchor retail development in Chelmsford
John Lewis has committed to anchoring the second phase of the Bond Street retail development in Chelmsford, and will be opening the company's first branch in Essex.
John Lewis' 119,000 sq ft “flexible format” department store in Chelmsford will be John Lewis’s third of its kind, following the opening of Exeter in 2012 and York in 2013. The shop would boost local employment with the creation of around 350 new jobs. The retailer will invest around £15m in the development.
The 300,000 sq ft Bond Street development, owned by Aquila will also include 20 retail units, providing a vibrant mix of shops, river fronted restaurants and a cinema and could be open as early as autumn 2014.
Tony Chambers, Aquila’s Chairman, added: “This scheme represents a fantastic opportunity for the growth of premium retailing in Chelmsford. We are now taking forward discussions with retailers and restaurateurs that have already expressed interest in coming to Bond Street and we and our agents, Douglas Stevens look forward to hearing from others who are attracted by our scheme”.
